This Glossary has been prepared for general information purposes only, if a word or words has more than one meaning, then we have only attempted to define the word or words in terms relating to interior office design. AFRDI
An abbreviation for Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute
Allowance
An allowance which is also referred to as a PC Sum, is an amount of money that is allowed for a certain task when there is insufficient information or time to prepare a proper quotation
AS 1428.1
An Australian Standard that sets out minimum requirements for office fit out so that disabled persons are not discriminated against.
AS
An abbreviation for Australian standards as set out by Standards Australia
AutoCAD
A very powerful piece of drafting software that has over time been adopted as the industry standard for office design. It allows extremely accurate plans and elevations to be drafted in a fairly quick time frame and reproduced easily.
BCA
An abbreviation for Building Code of Australia, this is the "bible" upon which interior design must be based in order for it to be compliant
Blue Print
Formally a method printing plans, now a general term for any plan
CBD
An abbreviation for a cupboard, also Central Business District
CC
An abbreviation for Construction Certificate (pertaining to council approvals)
CDC
An abbreviation for Complying Development Certificate (pertaining to council approvals)
Consultant
This is an expert in his or her field who provides their professional services for a fee
Credenza
Generally a low height hinged or sliding door cupboard, usually between 720mm and 900mm in height, and between 450mm and 600mm in depth
DA
An abbreviation for Development Application (pertaining to council approvals)
DA/CC
An abbreviation for Development Application / Construction Certificate (pertaining to council approvals)
DDA
An abbreviation for Disabled Discrimination Act
Desk
Generally a freestanding desk
DGPO
Double General purpose outlet, a double power point
Ducted Screen
Refers to the cabling duct that runs through a workstation screen
Estimate
Another term used for Quotation
FF&E Schedule
Furniture Fixings and Equipment schedule - This is a detailed schedule of everything that is required to go in an office fit out. They will generally include everything from the type of fabric that is proposed to be used on the task chairs, literally through to the model number of the kitchen sink
GPO
General purpose outlet, a power point
HD
An abbreviation for hinged door, usually with reference to a hinged door cupboard
JA
An abbreviation for Joint Application (pertaining to council approvals)
Make Good
When a lease is completed, the building owner will generally want the premises returned to the state in which you first accepted it, this is process is called a Make Good
Non Ducted Screen
Refers to a workstation screen that is not capable of being wired, wiring in these systems is either wall mounted or supported in baskets under

Owners Consent
You must obtain consent from the building owners before commencing any office fit out or renovation, after all you are only renting. Particularly required for council submissions for office fit out
Payment Schedule
The terms set out by a contractor or consultant on there preferred method, frequency, and due dates of their payments
PC Sum

PCA
An abbreviation for Private Certifying Authority
Pre finished board
A man made board such as chipboard or MDF that is covered in a melamine coating, very common desk top surface
R10 - R12
A method of describing the slip rating of flooring, usually pertaining to vinyl
RJ12
Standard jack for a phone to plug into
RJ45
Standard data jack for a PC to plug into
Screen
Generally a fabric covered partition that supports workstation desk tops and provides privacy
SD
An abbreviation for sliding door, usually with reference to a sliding door cupboard
Spatial Planning
The art of designing an office layout to make the most efficient use of space both now and throughout the term of your lease
Veneer joinery
A very thin sliver of actual timber that is glued to a substrate such as chipboard or MDF that is then polished and assembled in such a way so as to resemble solid timber furniture
Workstation
A desk usually supported by screens
